  • A misfire was found to be present on cylinder four of the engine. The ignition coil was discovered to have failed. However, the ignition coil was soaked in oil from a cracked valve cover assembly which caused the coil to rapidly deteriorate, which would make installing a new coil pointless because it would destroy it quite soon. As of this point, the plan was to replace the defective ignition coil, spark plugs because they are 70,000 miles overdue for service, the valve cover assembly, and any seal needed to put things together the way it came from factory. However, during removal of the number four spark plug, the spark plug resisted removal. The other three took little effort to unscrew. The number four spark plug broke off in the cylinder head, which made it to where there is really no good way to remove the broken spark plug. Several specialized tools were tried to extract the rest of it, however it remained frozen. It was not an issue because of age or rust, but it is believed that someone in the past upon installing of this plug may have absolutely destroyed the threads that the plug screws into. This caused the plug to not come out. For an example, a three foot bar was put onto the specialized tooling to extract the spark plug, and it still would not budge. At this point, the cylinder head was replaced. The engine was removed from underneath the vehicle in order to repair it. The engine was put onto an assembly stand and it was repaired. Any necessary seal, gasket, or bolt was replaced to prevent any comebacks, as well as it being unwise if not impossible to reuse some of the broken and old gaskets and seals. New, unbroken spark plugs were replaced as well. The injector seals were redone to avoid any high pressure fuel leaks or combustion leaks after removal of the injectors. As mentioned earlier, the valve cover was leaking oil. This was replaced with a new cover. The oil was thoroughly cleaned off upon reassembly. Some transmission fluid had to be drained and refilled with new fluid during repairs, as well as the coolant. Factory coolant was used upon refilling of the cooling circuit. The air conditioning system had to have it's high pressure gas recovered in order to safely disassemble the system. It was then recharged to the proper amount after repairs were completed. After assembly and testing of the vehicle, the ignition coil from cylinder three began failing. This was replaced as well with a genuine coil. During cylinder head removal, the coolant water outlet's plastic was shattered inside of the cylinder head, so it was replaced. During engine disassembly, the air conditioning compressor clutch bolt was noticed to be extremely loose, almost to the point where it needed a compressor assembly, which is not cheap. This bolt was removed and high strength thread locker was applied to prevent it from loosening. This prevented a costly air conditioning repair from needing to be done very soon. Another reason as to why the check engine light was illuminated is because of the engine computer not being satisfied with the low pressure fuel line sensor. The pressure sensor was indeed skewed, which caused a lean running condition before repairs as well, thus contributing to the rough running issue. This pressure sensor and it's seal were replaced. The engine now performs as expected.

  • Cam phaser came apart and damaged valve cover. Engine lost oil because of hole in valve cover. Replaced engine, drive belt, internal water pump, and replaced necessary gaskets. Discovered several wires and connectors that were chewed by rats. Saved quite a lot of money by repairing these wires and connectors rather than replacing them. Wiring is now properly soldered and sealed from the elements. Be aware of potential rodents in the area of parking. Attempted to clean off as much oil as possible. When the engine exploded, oil went everywhere. Found the transmission mount to be completely torn. Replaced mount while frame was removed. Filled with new oil and replaced oil filter. Filled with genuine DexCool coolant. Replaced front pads and rotors due to them being worn to minimum limit and the caliper slide pins being completely seized. Removed slide pins and cleaned, then reapplied proper lubricant. Replaced passenger side front wheel speed sensor due to it being chewed by a rodent.
